The FIFA opened a disciplinary process once morest the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) following the incidents that occurred last Tuesday at the Maracaná stadium, prior to the match between Brazil and Argentina for the South American Qualifiers.

The highest football entity accused the CBF, host of the match, of “potential violations of article 17” of the disciplinary code, which stipulates the rules relating to the order and safety of matches.

While, on the AFA side, it must respond for possible violations of articles 17.2 (inappropriate behavior of fans) and 14.5 (delay in the start of the match).

This last point has to do with the decision of the Argentine team to withdraw from the playing field due to what was happening in the stands, where the local police were repressing the visiting fans. After approaching the sector to try to calm the situation, the players returned to the locker room.

As captain Lionel Messi explained at the end of the match, the Albiceleste footballers made that determination with the intention of “calming the situation.”

Finally, when the brawl in the stands was interrupted, the team returned to the field and the game began, but almost 30 minutes late.

Both the CBF and the AFA might receive different sanctions, ranging from fines, to matches without fans, the partial or total closure of the stadium – in this case the Maracaná -, or the obligation to play their home games on a neutral field. Punishments may be appealed to the FIFA Court.
