Switzerland – The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) sparked a clash between Samuel Eto’o, President of the Cameroonian Federation, and his country’s government, over the appointment of a new technical staff for the Cameroonian national team.
The Cameroonian Minister of Sports decided to appoint Belgian Marc Brace as coach of the “Untamed Lions”, succeeding coach Rigobert Song (who left his position at the end of February, following the Cameroonian national team was eliminated from the last 16 finals of the African Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire by runner-up Nigeria), without referring to the Federation. Cameroonian, which sparked Eto’o’s anger.
The Cameroonian Federation said in an official statement: “In response to a written request from the International Federation (FIFA) regarding the mechanisms for appointing the technical and administrative staff of the Cameroonian national team, the Emergency Committee of the African Union, which met today, Monday, officially noted the above-mentioned recommendations and pledged to implement all measures that would “Protecting compliance with FIFA provisions as well as applicable laws and regulations in Cameroon.”
Eto’o rejected the decision to appoint Mark Brace as coach of the Cameroonian national team.
The Cameroonian national team leads its fourth group in the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup following beating Mauritius 3-0 and drawing with Libya 1-1.
The next test will be next June, when Cameroon will play two matches in the third and fourth rounds once morest its guest, Cape Verde, which also collected four points from its first two matches, and its host, Angola (two points from two draws).
