Argentinian world champion Lionel Messi won the award for the best player for the year 2022 at the “FIFA Best” Trophies ceremony in Paris.
Messi (35) received this distinction for the third time following 2009 and 2019, succeeding Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, victorious in 2020 and 2021. The seven-time Ballon d’Or, in competition with the French Kylian Mbappé and Karim Benzema , was the favorite of the evening, two and a half months following his world title in Qatar with Argentina, the only major title that was missing from his immense record.

Among the ladies, it was Spanish striker Alexia Putellas who was crowned best player of the year 2022. Putellas, Ballon d’Or in 2021 and 2022 and already crowned by FIFA in 2021, beat Beth Mead, champion Europe with England last year, and American Alex Morgan.
