FIFA allows players to request a match stoppage if they are subjected to racism

Switzerland – FIFA has given players who are subjected to racism the right to request a match be stopped.

FIFA announced in a statement published on Friday that it will begin implementing a unified global anti-racism sign at the U-20 Women’s World Cup “Colombia 2024.”

“Following the unanimous adoption of the ‘X’ as a sign of racist abuse at the 74th FIFA Congress in Bangkok on 17 May 2024, this gesture will become part of the football protocols when implemented at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024,” the statement read.

According to the statement, the aim of this sign is to enable players, coaches, referees, and the administrative staff of the teams to stand up to racism.

This procedure will be implemented in 3 steps, in the tournament hosted by Colombia, which starts on Saturday, August 31.

When players are subjected to racist abuse, they will cross their arms at the wrist to signal the referee to take the three steps.

The match will be stopped after the first step, and if the abuse continues, the match will be suspended with the players and referees leaving the field, and if the abuse does not stop during the suspension of the match, the match will be cancelled.

Commenting on the initiative, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Fighting racism is something we all have to do together.”

“The implementation of the No to Racism sign during the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024 is an important first step to empower players around the world,” he explained.

He continued: “It is now dedicated to implementing the three steps, and we look forward to implementing this around the world to achieve the greatest possible impact.”
