The Clasico and the Covid
Possibility of playing with vintage teams (2000), faster and managing the power of passes and strikes (2001), the HD version (2009), the FIFA series continues to evolve even if the Japanese studio Konami offers a strong rival with ISS Pro Evolution, then called Pro Evolution Soccer (PES). A bit like a virtual Real – Barça, every year it’s the Clasico to find out who will win the title of best football video game in the world. The Japanese game, which dethrones the American giant, buys the licenses of certain clubs like Juventus. Which forces FIFA to rename these clubs… Juventus of Turin becomes FC Piemonte.
After a few years without a title, FIFA tackles PES and regains the lead in the championship until today. In 2020, the Covid-19 and the confinements whistle the cessation of football matches. The rights paid for the exploitation of the license amount to an amount of 158 million dollars to FIFA (the international federation of amateur football). During this year, the franchise represents the main source of income for the international federation and attracts 25 million players.
