LONDON, January 15. /TASS/. Argentine striker Lionel Messi has been named the best player of 2023 by the International Football Federation (FIFA). The award ceremony took place in London.

Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, who plays for English Manchester City, and French striker Paris Saint-Germain Kylian Mbappe were also nominated for the award. According to the results of the survey, Messi and Haaland scored 48 points each, but the Argentine won the nomination due to the greater number of first places in the voting among national team captains. Messi did not attend the award ceremony and did not join via video link. The players received the award for the playing period from December 19, 2022 to August 20, 2023.
In December 2022, Messi became the world champion in Qatar as part of the Argentina national team. The striker scored seven goals in seven matches and was recognized as the best player of the tournament. In the 2022/23 season, Haaland won the championship, FA Cup and Champions League with Manchester City. The Norwegian became the English Premier League record holder for the most goals in a season (36), and he also became the top scorer in the Champions League (12 goals). Haaland received the Golden Boot as the top scorer of the season in Europe. Mbappe, together with the French national team, reached the final of the World Cup and became the top scorer of the tournament (8 goals); in the final match, the Frenchman scored a hat-trick. Together with PSG, Mbappe became the national champion, top scorer (29 goals) and player of the tournament.
The award was established in 2016. Messi won this prize for the third time, having previously won in 2019 and 2022. Also recognized as the best football players according to FIFA were the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (2016, 2017), the Croatian Luka Modric (2018) and the Pole Robert Lewandowski (2020, 2021).

The best player in women’s football was Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati, who won the World Cup with Spain in 2023. Bonmati was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Spaniard Pep Guardiola, who heads the English Manchester City, was recognized as the best coach of 2023. In women’s football, this prize was awarded to Sarina Wiegman from the Netherlands, who coaches the England team.
The winner of the Ferenc Puskás Award for the most beautiful goal was the Brazilian midfielder of Botafogo, Guilherme Madruga. Brazilian Ederson (Manchester City) was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the year among men, and Mary Earps (England, Manchester United) among women.
The Brazilian men’s team won the Fair Play award. The Brazilian national team received a prize for its fight against racism.
