Fierce Dutch-Lithuanian battle in Dutch court: mother sentenced to prison for child abduction

The story of Tommy and Simona, which is so widely discussed in the Netherlands, began in February 2019. The woman then told the man that she was going to go on vacation to Lithuania with her two-year-old daughter. This one did not object.

However, the woman never returned to the Netherlands and the husband never saw the child once more. The girl’s father, Tommy R., told reporters that he did not know where his daughter was for a long time. He came to Lithuania to look for his daughter with a journalist from the program “Kidnapped”. The whole story of the search for the daughter was twisted.

He found his ex-wife and daughter in Gargždaii, Klaipėda district.

According to the Dutch press, the woman caught by unexpected guests refused to cooperate. Only following much effort was it agreed that the father might see his daughter at her grandparents’ house.

Dutch lawyers noted that in this case, Lithuania violated Article 12 of the Convention on International Child Abduction, which says that the child must be returned to the country from which he was abducted, and further legal proceedings must take place in that country.

The punishment was increased

In May last year, the Hertogenboch court in the Netherlands sentenced Simona to 20 months in prison, 17 of which were suspended. According to the legislation in force in the Netherlands, the woman would spend at least 3 months in prison.

Simona, who herself does legal work in Lithuania, appealed this ruling. The case was considered on appeal. Last week, on March 14, the court in Hertogenboch announced a verdict that is even more painful for the woman.
