Juanita Castro, the younger sister of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, died on Monday at the age of 90 in her exile in Miami. Maria Antonieta Collins, co-author of Juanita Castro’s biography, called the deceased on the online service Instagram an “extraordinary woman” and “tireless fighter for the cause of the Cuba that she loved so much.”
According to the television channel Univision, she died of natural causes in a hospital in Miami. Juanita Castro fled Cuba in 1964 following breaking with her brothers Fidel and Raúl over the 1959 Cuban Revolution. She moved to the US state of Florida, from where she repeatedly criticized her brothers and even worked with the US secret service CIA to overthrow the Castro government.
She opened a drugstore where she worked for decades. In her autobiography “Fidel and Raúl, my brothers. The Secret History,” Castro discussed her ambivalent role as a member of the Cuban diaspora in the United States. “For the people of Cuba, I am a deserter because I left the country and denounced the regime there. For many in Miami, I am a ‘persona non grata’ because I am the sister of Fidel and Raúl,” she wrote .
Her brother Fidel died in Havana in 2016. Raúl Castro, now 92 years old, resigned as head of the Cuban Communist Party in 2021.
