Fiber optic internet is present in 52% of schools in Brazil, says research

A Long Band Internet via optical fiber It is the most common type of connection in Brazilian public schools. This is what the research indicates ICT Education 2022 which was released this Monday (25) by Internet Steering Committee in Brazil (CGI.br). In general, the connectivity standard is found in 54% of Elementary and Secondary Education institutions.

This index includes municipal, state and federal public schools, as well as private schools. Another important fact points out that 52% of the public schools mentioned have fiber infrastructure. When looking more specifically, the connection does not cover half of the municipal administration schools (46%).

Still in isolation, the survey showed that state institutions lead in this regard, with 68% and even surpass private schools. It is worth mentioning that most of the schools with fiber internet support (68%) are in urban areas. In rural areas, the most common type of connection is satellite signal.

By regions

In the case of Brazilian regions, the South has the highest participation, with 73% of schools. Next comes the Central-West, with 71% of institutions supporting fiber. Right following both, comes the Southeast region, with 52%, the North, which has 50% and the Northeast, which has 45%.

Connection speed

The research also showed that 38% of Brazilian institutions are equipped with connections of 51 Mbps or higher. The South and Midwest are the only regions with more than half of the schools at this speed. Meanwhile, 13% support connections between 3 Mbps and 10 Mbps.

Other technologies

In addition to optical fiber, the type most used in schools is via cable, which is very prominent in the Southeast region, representing 25% of the school network. The aforementioned satellite connection appears in greater numbers in the North and Northeast regions, both with 20%.
