The International Automobile Federation (FIA) canceled the first free practice sessions of the Las Vegas Grand Prix this Friday due to a manhole cover.

Although it’s hard to believe, The object was loose on the track, which caused the Ferrari of Spanish driver Carlos Sainz Jr. to stop following 9 minutes of practice.

In images broadcast by the FIA’s own broadcast, it is seen when the Iberian driver jumps over the sewer as if he were overcoming a pothole or some type of obstacle.

Beyond the scare, Sainz Jr. emerged unharmed and without any problems from the incident. However, his vehicle had to be towed.

The car was removed from the track and the team had to change a series of power unit components so that the Spaniard might participate in the delayed second session.

After the inconvenience, the driver of the Italian team has suffered a drop of 10 places on the grid for this weekend’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.

The reason, According to the race stewards, it has to do with Sainz using his third energy reserve of the season, one more than allowed by the regulations.

“Although Sainz’s violation was due to very unusual external circumstances, we are obliged to impose the sanction and reject a request for leniency,” the commissioners said.

“If we had the authority to grant an exception in what we consider in this case to be extenuating, unusual and unfortunate circumstances, we would have done so. However, the regulations do not allow such action,” they added.
