FHI: Young people had more psychological problems during and after the covid quarantine

Being in or having been in quarantine was associated with more psychological problems among young people, the Mother, father and child study (MoBa) shows Institute of Public Health (FHI).

– In particular, it seemed that having been in quarantine several times was associated with more symptoms of anxiety and depression, says research fellow Johanne Hagen Pettersen at the PsychGen Center for genetic epidemiology and mental health at FHI.

In the studies, the young people were asked five questions in which they answered the extent to which they were troubled by negative emotions.

Where 14 per cent of those who had never been in quarantine answered that they had serious psychological problems, this proportion was 19 per cent among those who had been in quarantine once. The proportion was 21 per cent both among those who had been in quarantine several times, or who were still in quarantine when they were asked.

The connection between quarantine several times and psychological problems was stronger among 16-year-olds, compared to 17- and 18-year-olds and among young people from families where the parents had a lower level of education.

– It is nevertheless important to remember that there may be other things that explain the connections we find. It is not certain that being in quarantine is in itself the cause of the increase in mental disorders, says Pettersen.

Out of a total of 17,250, blacks invited 7,787, i.e. 51 per cent, at the first data collection, and participation fell to 17 per cent at the sixth data collection.
