The Moroccan Society of Endometriosis and Reproductive Medicine (MSERM) organized its first international congress in Fez.
The four-day event was attended by several international speakers from 24 countries including (United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Canada, Italy, India, Belgium, Malaysia, Turkey, France, Egypt, Mexico.. ..). It was an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences with many learned societies, with the aim of improving the diagnostic and therapeutic management of endometriosis. “Our main objective is to make this disease known to all general practitioners and specialists and also to women who suffer from it and who do not know it, for a better identification and development of public awareness of this pathology which can be treated,” says Dr Mohammed Zarqaoui, President of MSERM.
According to him, this disease is very common. It affects 1 in 10 women worldwide and is caused by the presence of tissue similar to the uterine lining outside the uterus. It remains to this day little diagnosed since it takes 8 to 10 years on average to make the diagnosis of endometriosis throughout the world. Unacceptable delays especially for women in the childbearing phase who suffer from pain and delay in getting pregnant. For example, in the United States it takes 10 years to make the diagnosis and 8 years in France. This disease is very often manifested by severe pain during menstruation and infertility in couples during the childbearing phases. Once diagnosed, and depending on the stage in the evolution of the disease, therapeutic management can be ensured either by the prescription of medical treatments which can reduce pain and improve the quality of life, or through surgery which allows effectively remove lesions.
These treatments make it possible to control the repercussions of the disease on the daily life of these women and to improve the quality of life of the couples. Beyond the scientific nature linked to this congress of international scope, the organizing committee chose Fez, the spiritual capital of Morocco to host this event in order to contribute to the promotion of the city and the enhancement of its cultural heritage, its tourist assets and its culinary art, and this through the organization of gala dinners at the Palaces and Riads of the medina, the organization of guided tours in the medina, the exhibition of local products adjacent to the space conference, etc. “As a doctor, what strikes me the most with the treatment of this disease are the expressions of happiness found by these patients and it is encouraging to go further in order to ensure better treatment and better care. “, emphasizes Dr. Zarqaoui.
Finally, it should be noted that the association he chairs was created two years ago in order to fill a lack of interest in a pathology that is so common but in need of diagnosis (endometriosis). This scientific society brings together international experts in medicine, surgery, biology and genetics, who work in close collaboration with Moroccan doctors to promote scientific research and training in the field of endometriosis and reproductive medicine.
