Fewer drivers caught illegally using red diesel in 2023

Customs authorities checked 1,434 drivers driving illegally with cheaper red diesel in their tanks in 2023, figures from the FPS Finances revealed on Friday. For the first time in at least four years, the number of people caught has decreased.

Red diesel is (primarily) a heating fuel and is therefore subject to a lower excise rate than diesel intended as car fuel. Red diesel is prohibited for vehicles traveling on public roads. Fines range from 500 to 5,000 euros and double in the event of a repeat offense.

The drop in the number of surprised drivers is accompanied by a drop in the number of checks. Last year, customs checked nearly 30,000 vehicles. This year, they checked more than 26,000, of which 5.4% were found wanting.

Since Thursday January 18, all fuel suppliers must equip their red diesel with a new euro marker. This resists common bleaching methods. This makes it much more difficult for violators to deceive inspectors.
