Fewer cases of dengue, but the Ministry of Health asks not to lower the guard

Asuncion, IP Agency.- Although Paraguay has seen a decrease in dengue cases, the Ministry of Public Health is urging the elimination of Aedes aegypti breeding sites.

According to the report for week 25, there was a decrease in both notifications of arboviruses with 3,713 and confirmed cases of dengue with 676. The predominant circulating serotype is DENV-2.

Regarding hospitalizations of the 245 registered patients, 111 have been diagnosed with dengue, according to the official report from the health portfolio.

The group most affected by this disease is the pediatric population, with 36% of the 676 cases, 240 of which are children and adolescents. In the last epidemiological week, no deaths were recorded and the total number of patients is 130.

According to the report, there has been a decrease in notifications in San Pedro (58%), Alto Paraguay (53%) and Caaguazú (34%). In Asunción (15%) and Central (10%) there has been a slight decrease.

Strengthen control measures

Considering that Paraguay is an endemic country for dengue, the Ministry of Health requests that control and elimination of breeding sites be continued throughout the year, especially following the rains, as well as the use of protective barriers as a repellent from 2 months of age, and the placement of mosquito nets on beds, cribs and strollers.

In this context, it emphasizes the importance of disposing of all unused objects that accumulate water or those that cannot be disposed of, such as household appliances, tires or others, which should be placed under a roof or covered in a way that prevents them from accumulating water.

If you have tanks, drums or any container in your home that contains water that will be used, they must be kept covered to prevent mosquitoes from entering.

The water in your pet’s drinking bowl should be changed daily, following cleaning the bowl with a brush, soap and water to remove any eggs that may have stuck to the walls of the bowl.

Don’t forget to replace the water in vases with wet sand and chlorinate the water in swimming pools to prevent mosquito breeding.

Timely consultation

If you have a fever or other symptoms of dengue, the Ministry of Health urges you to seek medical attention promptly to detect the appearance of warning signs and avoid complications of the condition.

It also reminds people of the need to avoid self-medication and to comply with medical rest under a mosquito net to prevent the spread of the virus.

Pay special attention to the warning signs, which may include abdominal pain, vomiting, altered consciousness, bleeding (gums, nose, genitals, and others), and insist on eliminating breeding sites.
