A banal story turned into a masterpiece.

None of the directors wanted to take on the film adaptation of Alexander Volodin’s script “The Sorrowful Life of a Rogue.” The playwright was regarding to remake it into a play and send it to the theater, when suddenly Georgy Danelia volunteered to transfer the story to the screens.

The plot centers on a common family drama. The main character is torn between his wife and his mistress. Either indecisiveness of character, or feelings for both women prevent him from making the final choice.

None of the viewers might have imagined that the director had made a film regarding the real torment of Natalia Gundareva and Marina Neelova, who got the roles of a deceived wife and a secret lover, respectively. The first played herself: her husband sharpened his skis for another woman. It didn’t take long for her colleague on the set to get used to the character. Neyolova had an affair with an unfree man, however, his identity remained a mystery.

Many years have passed since the release of the film, but the public is still delighted with the Soviet masterpiece, which has become an eternal classic.

“What a deep moral, and how accessible it is presented, and how the actors play lively, it’s a cannon,” “A banal story. And I can’t tear myself away from the film!”, “I’m probably watching it for the fifth time. And every time it’s like anew. As time passes, a new meaning and different colors appear. Every pause, not a word, takes on a new meaning.” – they write on the Internet.
