The Achaean president of the National Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, Pavlos Satolias, likened the slice for the Greek economy to “white gold”, who referred to the increased exports in recent years, with more and more countries opening their market to welcome the “queen » of Greek cheeses.
“Approximately 65% of the annual feta cheese produced in the country is now destined for exports,” said Pavlos Satolias, speaking to “P”.
“In the balance of current transactions in the agri-food sector, feta has contributed to our country 1 billion euros based on the numbers of 2023. We are talking about a dynamic product that is constantly developing, giving perspective to both the producer and the processing in our country. It is the “white gold” of the country” said, among others, Pavlos Satolias and added: “It is appropriate that in 2014 feta made exports of 142 million euros and in 2023 it will make almost 1 billion, we are talking about an increase of about 700% and that’s why we have to protect it from forgeries, from misrepresentations. It’s a constant problem, the feta has to be the original. The road is one. Strict legislative framework that will act as a deterrent. No one can play with our country. The imports that did not come with the perspectives and with the health protocol that other serious countries do.”
The president of ETHEAS also spoke about the other slices, arguing that they are not of the same quality, underlining: “It is not possible for a slice of the same quality and production in our country to be cheaper abroad. Those who say slices are cheaper abroad, they are imported slices, with another production method that is not under the PDO framework,” he said, referring indirectly but clearly to the issue of misleading names, which baptize feta, yellow cheeses or cheeses without the ratio of sheep and goat milk provided for by the Community regulation’.
