Festival of August 15 in Huy: Assessing the Showmen, Rain Impacts Attendance, and Hopes for Statte Fair

There were a few hours left before the closing of the Festival of August 15, in Huy. The right moment to draw up an initial assessment with the showmen. By walking on the arteries, it is obvious that many locations are already free. Indeed, some fairgrounds have already left since Tuesday for the fair of giants in Ath or the fair of Saint-Trond.

“It’s an average yearexplains Philippe Riguelle. We worked very well on August 15 but not the other days. The cause ? The rain that has come too often. This week of overtime isn’t the best I’ve had. What works are the fireworks and the days with tariffs. After the party, I will take care of my grandchildren and wait for the party in Statte which I love.” The €1 fair starts at the port of Statte on September 29 and runs until November 12. An opinion shared by Didier Mahy, the owner of the “Chez Nous” café, located on avenue Delchambre: “Apart from August 15, it’s very quiet.”

This mixed impression is felt by almost all showmen.

“Times are hard”

“You can see it for yourselfexplains Nicole Schweig, who offers a circuit. It’s 6 p.m. and I had two clients today. The sky is uncertain, times are tough and it is clear that the clientele has less money. It’s not been my best year.”

Others also mention the works in the city, which generate parking problems. “You see a lot of young people, explains a fairground. It’s not them who spend the most, but rather the oldest who open their wallets. So if you ask grandparents to park two kilometers away and then take the stroller from the trunk with uncertain weather, you can imagine the reluctance.”

Fortunately there is this last fireworks and the last day at a reduced price.

“I hope there will be a few peopleexplains Lætitia, who offers the Union Hutoise youth bar. We are making €5,000 less in revenue than last year. We’ve been here three hours and we haven’t sold for $100 yet. People are watching their finances more. Finally, those who sell food should not be allowed to set up gazebos with drinks.”
