There is a state of emergency at the ferry port in Dover, England. P&O Ferries, which normally offers 15 daily crossings to Calais in northern France, suspended operations this weekend.
resume next week?
The ferries are expected to set sail once more next week. The company asked people who absolutely had to travel to look for other travel options on their own.
P&O laid off 800 employees at short notice in order to replace them with low-wage workers and justified this step with economic constraints. The British government criticized the company’s actions. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it appeared P&O had acted unlawfully.
Crossing with DFDS ferries delayed
The competitor DFDS, whose ships also operate the Dover – Calais route, asked people not to come to the Dover ferry port without a booking confirmation. The crossings with the DFDS were sometimes subject to considerable delays due to the high volume.
