News of possible ferries to Cuba, such as the aforementioned route between Miami and Havana, which a Spanish shipping company wants, continue to dominate headlines. In 2022, there was talk of a “very close” route, the Havana-Cozumel route, between Cuba and Mexico. What happened two years after the announcement?

At the beginning of 2022, official media, such as Cubadebate, announced “more good news for connections between Mexico and Cuba” and even a considerable increase in the flow of tourists if the Iberian shipping company Atlantic International Cruises implemented a new ferry or cruise route between Cozumel and Havana that year.

According to Cozumel City Hall authorities, this new route was being designed to promote tourism development in both ports. “October 2022” had been announced as the launch date for ferries between Cozumel and Havana.

The president of the Municipal Government, Juana Alonso Marrufo, even met with executives from the Spanish cruise company and the Punta Langosta maritime terminal to fine-tune what would be “the final details” of the operation.

By the end of 2021, inspections of the facilities at the port of departure had already been carried out to prepare for the launch of this shipping line, whose base of operations would be in Cozumel.

The routes were scheduled to begin in October 2022, with each ferry or cruise ship capable of carrying about a thousand passengers per trip, which would significantly increase the exchange of tourists between the two countries.

“Ferrys”, Cruises, Havana-Cozumel active on Atlantic International website

Atlantic International Cruises had intended to establish Cozumel as its “Home Port” for this connection with Havana, facilitating access for Mexican travelers, foreign tourists in the region and local residents of Cozumel who wish to visit the island without having to apply for a visa. But what if it all came to nothing?

Until now, there was no news, but on the official website of the Spanish shipping company, which planned to launch these ferries between Havana and Cozumel in 2022, there is an announcement of a cruise that links Mexico and Cuba, called “The Pearl of the Caribbean”.

Sold as a package of 8 days and 7 nights, it would link Cozumel-Cienfuegos-Cayo Largo-María la Gorda-Havana and Cozumel again. The page does not give more details, because it is under maintenance. So what was announced as “ferries” ended up being a cruise with tourists.
