Ferrari’s Golden Age in Formula 1: Reliving the 1970s Glory

2023-11-10 18:28:56

For America, the 1970s represent a kind of golden age of Formula 1, which is why a special appearance by the Ferrari stars was decided for the GP’s return to Las Vegas. The team from Maranello is of course not giving up the traditional red, but the racing cars will sport some white accents, as the pictures of the oldest GP racing team in the world prove.

Because in those years the Italian GP racers were not only painted red, but also partly white, which is why this year’s cars from Leclerc and Carlos will also be painted in this color combination. Puma has designed a completely new team kit to match the look.

The team also announced that the racing suits and helmets of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will not look as usual, recalling the successes of the 1970s: Niki Lauda brought the famous sports car brand the world title in 1975 and 1977 and won, among other things, the World Championship race in Watkins Glen in 1975.

Clay Regazzoni won at Long Beach in 1976 and Carlos Reutemann won at Watkins Glen in 1978. In 1979, Gilles Villeneuve even achieved two victories in America, beating the competition in the legendary Ferrari 312 T4 at Long Beach and Watkins Glen. American interest in Formula 1 was initially sparked by the Italian-American Mario Andretti, who won the South African GP in 1971 behind the wheel of the Ferrari 312 B.

Ferrari is currently not fighting at the top, the declared goal is second place in the World Championship, which Mercedes currently occupies with a 20 point lead over Ferrari. Sports director Diego Ioverno emphasizes: “The most important thing for us would be to win, but we didn’t manage that. Second place is better than third or fourth. That’s why he remains our target.”
