Ferrari actually wanted to fight for the world title once more this year, but in the end the oldest GP racing team in the world only ended up in third place in the constructors’ championship. The Red Bull Racing Team and Max Verstappen secured the title once more. Mercedes landed in second place in the team table.
The two Ferrari stars were also unable to achieve the promising placings of the previous year: Charles Leclerc, who finished the 2022 World Cup in second place, had to be content with fifth place. His teammate Carlos Sainz, who finished fifth in the World Championships last year, ended up finishing 7th in the World Championships.
Little consolation for the Spaniard: He gave the traditional Italian racing team their only win of the season this year with first place in Singapore. Nevertheless, the Spaniard’s contract negotiations are proving difficult, report colleagues from Gazzetta dello Sport.
The bone of contention is therefore the length of the contract. While Sainz, whose agreement expires following the 2024 season, would like a two-year extension, the team is said to prefer a one-year contract in order to be able to bring McLaren driver Lando Norris on board following 2025.
The Italian media report that things are going much better for Leclerc. The Monegasque is expected to commit to five years following 2024, with his salary increasing from an initial 25 million euros per year to 50 million euros. Like all salary amounts, these figures should of course be viewed with caution, as the details of the driver contracts are usually not communicated.
