LONDON (Reuters) – Fernando Alonso (42, Spain) of Aston Martin, a Formula 1 auto racing team, said on the 12th that he may continue to be active until he is 50 years old.

Alonso’s contract with Aston Martin runs until the end of the 2024 season, but the team is said to be open to extending his contract until 2026. Alonso is also rumored to be a candidate to replace Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton (Britain), who will move to Ferrari in 2025.

There are few drivers in modern F1 who have remained active into their 40s, but Nigel Mansell (Britain), the 1992 overall individual champion, won the 1994 race when he was 41 years old.

Alonso, who is now in his 22nd season as the oldest active driver in F1, explained, “This year was the best in the physical fitness measurements I take every year.” Until a few years ago, he thought that age 41 or 42 would be his limit, but he said, “If I can maintain my motivation, I might be able to continue until I’m 48, 49, or 50.”
