Fernando Alonso said in 2022 that the Alpine F1 Team’s car has the potential to find a “big step”, but admits it is unlikely to be able to close the gap with Ferrari.
At the F1 Australian Grand Prix last weekend, he suffered a crash due to hydraulic problems in qualifying Q3 and was seriously competing for a chance to win the podium in the final, but the safety car did not work the reverse strategy and he ended up in 17th place. Fernando Alonso finished.
“I think it’s hard to match Ferrari’s pace, because it’s clear that we’re 0.8 seconds behind, or 1 second, at the moment when we look at the qualifying performance in the first two races,” Fernando Alonso said.
“I think it’s a bit too optimistic to think that we can fill that gap, but let’s take a look.”
“We need to keep working. These cars are still in their infancy, so testing in a wind tunnel could find something much bigger than we initially thought, and could take a big step. ”
