Fernando Alonso of Alpine F1 says no one should “like” the new generation 2022 F1 car.
F1 has great expectations for close battles and overtaking opportunities by radically switching ground effect effects to aerodynamics. However, the weight limit of F1 cars has risen again, and Sebastian Vettel likens the interval when the ground effect effect is applied in low-speed corners to driving a “truck”.
“It feels like you’re running faster because the ducts under the floor generate more downforce at 300kph,” Fernando Alonso, 40, told Forbes Espana.
“But in the slow corners, it’s still a lot of work. The suspension of the car is very stiff and the ride height is lower than before. I don’t think any of us like this.”
“I used to run the track for 1 minute and 17 seconds in 2021, but now I’m starting from 1 minute and 22 seconds. Ask each driver and he’ll hear what he really wants to do in 1 minute and 10 seconds. “
“Environmentally friendly gasoline makes the car heavier with less horsepower.”
But Fernando Alonso says he understands that F1 had to steer a sharp turn towards a more environmentally friendly and more sustainable direction.
“That’s the right path. F1 is increasingly moving towards these technology areas and environmental considerations.”
“Theoretically, the car will be more equal because it has basically the same parts, such as the front wing and the rear wing. There is less freedom to develop there and the sport will be more balanced. Is a good thing. “
But Fernando Alonso says he’s not a fan of the new 18-inch Pirelli tires in 2022.
“We lose grip much faster than before,” said Fernando Alonso.
“I liked the 2005 one the most, but it doesn’t exist anymore, so I’m happy with the current one.”
At a personal level, Fernando Alonso says he has returned to “100%” after undergoing surgery to remove the titanium plate in his jaw that was buried in a bicycle accident in early 2021.
However, the message about the 2022 Alpine F1 Team’s car is not very optimistic.
“We’ve made progress, but the reality is that other teams have made more progress than we do,” admits Fernando Alonso.
“I’ll start slowly, but after Barcelona, I think there are rivals who worked smarter than us.”
