The F1 Miami GP Steward has ruled a five-second penalty on provisional ninth-placed Fernando Alonso (Alpine) following the final race on May 8. This promoted Alex Albon (Williams) to 9th place and Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) to 10th place.
Alonso made contact at the end of the race when he set up Pierre Guthrie (AlphaTauri) on Turn 1. This resulted in a 5 second penalty and 1 penalty point. Guthrie suffered damage to the right rear of the AT03’s body and then retired following contact with Lando Norris (McLaren).
Separately, he was given an additional 5 seconds penalty and 2 penalty points following the race for a permanent advantage of running off course on Turn 14. He retreated to 11th place. The cumulative total has reached 3 points.
Before the ruling, Alonso was pleased to score points, acknowledging that the incident with Guthrie was his responsibility.
“I’m happy to be back in the points. I was able to improve my position with some good moves in the race. I was a little unlucky with the timing of the safety car. Without that, I would probably be in 7th or 8th place. I think I was fighting. “
“I made a mistake when I tried to overtake Pierre (Guthrie). That was my responsibility and I apologized to him.”
“Overall, I don’t think race pace was bad. It was pretty tough physically because of the high temperature and humidity. I think today’s points are worth earning.”
Max Verstappen (Red Bull), who started from the 3rd grid, won his 23rd victory in the 2022 F1 Round 5 Miami Grand Prix final race at the Miami International Autodrome on Sunday, May 8th. .. Charles Leclerc came in second, followed by Carlos Sainz and Ferrari on the podium in third.
The next round of the Spanish Grand Prix, set in the Catalan circuit, will begin with free practice 1 on May 20th.
