At 7:00 a.m. on February 16, Feng Tao patrolled the route in the venue as usual, but there was no longer the lively scene of the previous day in the venue. On the big jumping track, workers are already carrying out follow-up removal work.
As a police officer in charge of security in Shougang Park, Feng Tao has a lot of affection for the big diving platform. He has witnessed the process of building the big jumping platform from the beginning to becoming “Xuefeitian”. Like the more than 3,000 workers in the construction, he is a builder. It’s just that he built a security system, ranging from the entry and exit routes of the entire area to the staffing of a certain duty post.
For more than a year, Feng Tao has been familiar with all angles of the big jumping platform, but the person who revolves around it every day does not care to watch any of the competitions held here.
A topic without precedent: weaving a “safety net” for the park
Going straight to the west along Beijing’s Chang’an Avenue, the Beijing Shougang Industrial Zone, which was familiar to Beijingers in the past, has now become a cultural industrial park. The Shougang ski jumping platform with beautiful and smooth curves has become the most lively place in the park this winter. Here, the Chinese team has won two Winter Olympic gold medals.
In the TV, you can see the mountains in the distance from the big jumping platform, surrounded by cylindrical cooling towers, towering chimneys, and vaguely see the factory workshops of the last century.
More than a year ago, Feng Tao saw another scene. At the end of 2020, Feng Tao joined the security work of the Shougang Ski Jumping Platform as a police officer of the Internal Security Brigade of the Beijing Shijingshan Public Security Bureau. At that time, the auxiliary facilities and external venues around the big jumping platform were all under construction. The big jumping area covers an area of 3.4 hectares. Feng Tao’s job is to make security planning in this area: where is the auditorium, where is the most convenient security gate, how to plan the escape route, and how to divide the closed area under the epidemic , the number of security personnel and how to arrange their positions.
Everything starts from scratch, and the first step is to conduct a field survey. Feng Tao set up a 2.7-kilometer closed line, 45 locations with a total of 4,200 square meters of security space, drew a map of the venue’s security force deployment, and established the venue’s infrastructure ledger.
In February last year, an office area was built around the site, and Feng Tao officially settled in Shougang Park. After the arrangements were made, all the security forces were officially stationed and put into trial operation in October last year, waiting for the opening of the Winter Olympics.
According to Chen Haiyan, head of the Internal Security Brigade of Shijingshan Public Security Bureau, there are three other important locations within the 2.9 square kilometers of Shougang Park, namely the office of the Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, the Winter Olympics Technical Operation Center and the Winter Olympics Power Security Service Center. The security work in these areas is under simultaneous planning.
Wu Jiajie, deputy head of the Internal Security Brigade, remembered that in October last year, she was assigned to do the security plan for these three locations. After getting the schematic diagram of the Shougang Park, she was a little overwhelmed. The Cultural Industry Park is now to be used as the venue for the Winter Olympics. This is a subject with no precedent.
“Let’s explore slowly, check the information, and see if we can get inspiration.” Wu Jiajie learned from seniors who participated in the security work of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The certification scheme alone is very complicated. There are many people participating in the Winter Olympics, and there are more than 100 units in the Shougang Park alone. A precise process is required for personnel verification, certification, and epidemic prevention and control. She feels that her job is to weave a safety net for the park, “to find a way to weave densely and finely.”
Every day when I open my eyes, the “security map” comes to my mind
From January 4 this year, Shougang Park has entered the Winter Olympics security time, and all security personnel have been in place. Since then, everyone has entered an endless state.
There are a total of five security checkpoints outside the big jumping venue, one of which is open 24 hours a day, and the other four start work at 5:30 in the morning. With the opening of the security checkpoint, all the venues “wake up”, and the security work has also begun.
“The security positions are adjusted according to the arrangement of the game and the overall operation of the venue.” Every day when he opened his eyes, the arrangement for this day appeared in Feng Tao’s mind like a drawing. Feng Tao will arrive at the big diving venue before dawn. His first job is to circle around the 2.7-kilometer closed line, and then start to check point by point according to the focus of the day’s work.
If there is no competition on this day, at 4 pm, Feng Tao and the security team will convene the person in charge of each point to hold a work review meeting to check the work of the day and fill the gaps. In the past year, Feng Tao’s earliest time off work was following 9 pm. After the Winter Olympics began, he was basically at work 24 hours a day.
Want to go to the big jumping platform and feel the guarded venue
For more than a year, he walked around the big diving platform every day, and Feng Tao might remember every detail of it. From a steel frame structure, to gradually showing the beauty of streamlined lines, and then to laying artificial snow following closed-loop management, Feng Tao felt that this 60-meter-high behemoth became more and more beautiful.
Later, Feng Tao also learned that the design of the big jumping platform was inspired by the flying ribbons in the Dunhuang murals, so it was named “Xue Feitian”, and he felt that the big jumping platform had a hint of romance.

Feng Tao also knew regarding that important game, but he didn’t even bother to watch it, not even the big jumping platform. “There are athletes, coaches, and staff from so many countries at the scene. Later, Feng Tao didn’t even bother to watch the video of the game last time, and the calls came one following another, and the calls on the walkie-talkie kept ringing. Zhao Weihua, deputy head of the Public Security Detachment of Shijingshan Public Security Bureau, who is in charge of the security work in the closed loop, said that even the police on duty on the sidelines of the game had never seen Gu Ailing and Su Yiming win the championship. Everyone just listened to the cheers from the audience and volunteers. Come out and win the game.
“With our backs to the field and the audience facing the audience, we cannot be absent. Our athletes have won the championship, and we must ensure that everything is foolproof, so that the athletes can successfully complete the following things.” Feng Tao said.
On the followingnoon of February 15, the news that Su Yiming won the championship came, and the last game of the entire Shougang Division also ended. Feng Tao recalled that at that moment, he felt joy for Su Yiming winning the championship, and also joy that the work was regarding to be successfully completed. During the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Feng Tao was on duty at the Laoshan Bicycle Competition Venue in Shijingshan District. Now he has completed the security work of the Beijing Winter Olympics once more. This is his luck. It’s all worth it.”
At present, although the competition of the big platform is over, the Winter Olympics are still going on. “Those who travel a hundred miles are half and ninety”, Feng Tao and his colleagues always keep this sentence in mind, and the corresponding work is still going on, and they dare not slack off.
Recalling the scenes of Chinese Winter Olympic athletes fighting their best during the competition, Feng Tao also has a wish: “I really hope the snow will stay for a while, and sometimes I also want to go up and down to try it out, and feel what the venue that we have been guarding for so long is like. .”
