Femicide: the accused would be the ex-spouse of the victim, according to the SPVM

The ex-spouse of the 42-year-old woman murdered in her Montreal-North apartment on Friday might be the accused in this case, said the Montreal Police Service (SPVM).

The murder occurred in a residential building on Boulevard Lacordaire. The victim’s new partner is said to have made the horrific discovery.

“It is possible that the suspect is the victim’s ex-spouse,” said SPVM publicist Caroline Chèvrefils. […] The suspect is not known to police and is expected to appear this followingnoon [samedi].»

The 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday evening. He was met by investigators from the major crimes section.

According to our information, Viergemene Toussaint was stabbed in the stomach and neck. His death was pronounced at the scene.

The murder of Viergemene Toussaint was the 24th to be committed in Montreal in 2022.

She is the ninth victim of marital feminicide since the beginning of the year in the metropolis and the second in the space of only eight days.

On September 8, Gisèle Itale-Betondi, a 29-year-old mother, was stabbed to death in the borough of LaSalle. Her ex-husband was arrested and later charged with premeditated murder. Kamila Rodriguez Vital de Queiroz, 39, was killed on August 17.

Audrey-Sabrina Gratton, 43, was killed on August 1.

Monique Landry, 58, was killed on May 5.

Louise Avon, 64, was killed on April 1.

Madeleine Desormeaux, 68, was killed on March 31.

Maria Cristovao, 71, was killed on February 19.

Patrizia Rao, 59, was killed on February 18.

Two children also died in a context of domestic violence in 2022. Félix and Edouard, 2 years and 6 months old, were killed on January 10 by their father.

In 2021, according to SOS Violences Conjugales, 18 men killed their spouse or ex-spouse and a father killed his two daughters in a context of post-separation violence.
