Several Venezuelan non-governmental organizations on Monday rejected the continued detention of activist Rocío San Miguel, president of the NGO Control Ciudadano, and demanded her release, coinciding with her birthday.
Rocío San Miguel, a prominent human rights defender, turns 58 today and will spend her time in prison, a situation that has moved Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the Party, to show his support for the opposition.
In an act of solidarity and support, Feijóo used the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, to send a message to San Miguel, condemning the lack of action by the Spanish government in this situation. «Today Rocío San Miguel turns 58, and she is serving her time in prison for the ‘crime’ of defending the law and freedom in Venezuela. I send her a big hug and all the support of the Popular Party in the face of the inaction of the Spanish government.“Feijoo wrote.
Through the social network X, different NGOs expressed that this Monday the activist “He will spend his birthday behind the bars of the Sebin (Bolivarian National Intelligence Service) and without access to justice“, which – they assured – is “has denied her since she was arbitrarily detained“, on February 9th.
«She will not be able to celebrate with her family and loved ones or hug her daughter in freedom because, since February, she has been a political prisoner in Venezuela.“, wrote Justice, Encounter and Forgiveness (JEP), Fundaredes and the Human Rights Center of the Andrés Bello Catholic University (UCAB) in X.
San Miguel, accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP, Attorney General’s Office) of her alleged connection to a conspiracy that included a plan to assassinate Nicolás Maduro, was arrested at the Maiquetía international airport, which serves Caracas, when she was preparing to travel with her daughter.
Attorney General Tarek William Saab said on February 19 that San Miguel “delivered information” on military defense systems to a European Union (EU) ambassador and to embassies of three other countries, which he did not specify.
Saab then claimed that during the raid on the San Miguel residence on February 14, maps, telephones, diaries and computers were found proving that he “gave sensitive information” to “foreign powers” in “secret meetings” held in Venezuela, the EU and the United States, with diplomatic representatives and foreign military personnel.
