Love your teenagers, they will thank you! A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that young people who feel loved, experience optimism, happiness, esteem, and more. become thirtysomethings in good cardiometabolic health.
“We have learned a lot over the past few decades regarding the impact of discrimination and other social risks that young people of color face, which may explain their high rates of cardiometabolic disease, however, much less attention is given to the inherent strengths they possess and how those strengths can be leveraged to advance health equity,” said study lead author Farah Qureshi, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore.
Five good attitudes
As part of this study, the researchers looked at data from nearly 3,500 American high school students followed for more than two decades. In the panel, half were girls, 67% white youth, 15% black teens, 11% Latino teens, and 6% Native American, Asian or other. Throughout the duration of this research, data on their health and well-being was collected.
