Federia and CIB request a minimum banking service for co-ownerships

Federia, the federation of French-speaking real estate agents, and CIB, its Dutch-speaking counterpart, are calling on members of the Chamber’s Economy Committee to set up a minimum banking service for co-ownerships, at a time when the latter are facing an increase bank charges.

According to Charlotte De Thaeye, general director of Federia, co-owners’ associations (ACP), which are legally required to have two bank accounts, face cost increases “of 300% or more”. “Many banks have recently started to charge additional fees of 200, 250 or even 500 euros. These fees are added to the monthly management fees which vary depending on the bank,” she explains in a press release. These increases are also announced in a very short period of time, denounces Federia.

The federation also reports that banks refuse requests to open ACP accounts or change ACP term accounts or savings accounts into current accounts, with the associated fees. “This discourages co-owners from building up sufficient savings,” believes Charlotte De Thaeye.

While a bill intended to provide additional guarantees to combat banking exclusions will be discussed next Wednesday in the Economy Committee in the House, Federia and the CIB call on deputies to set up a minimum banking service for co-ownerships, applying to both legal accounts. Federia thus supports the fact that co-ownerships in apartment buildings represent around 1.5 million inhabitants. “On behalf of the trustees and owners of these apartments, we therefore ask political leaders to intervene without delay,” concludes the federation.
