The reaction of Federal President Van der Bellen on the death of the Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny caused an unusual diplomatic aftermath on Friday evening.
“In connection with offensive statements made by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen regarding Russia and the Russian leadership, the embassy has lodged a firm protest with the Austrian Foreign Ministry,” wrote Russia’s embassy in Vienna on X, formerly Twitter.
It was said in a verbal note that such outrageous rhetoric could not be tolerated. When asked by APA, an embassy spokesman explained that they were referring to Van der Bellen’s characterization of President Vladimir Putin’s regime.
In his first statement on X in the afternoon, the Federal President expressed his shock over Navalny’s death. He had also declared: “Vladimir Putin and his murderous regime are responsible for this.”
