Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL): what is this nonsense?

Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) : what is this nonsense?

Willi the farmer*

We can obviously smile at the sight of this nonsense of the BMEL. But it is a heavy weight in the definition of European policies… and I have concerns regarding the positioning of ours.

Yesterday, March 22, was World Water Day. So far so good. But what the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has actually added itself to the list of fake news of recent days. While the German television channel ZDF apologized once more for the cereal bee, the press service of the BMEL wrote that there are 15,420 liters of water in 1 kg of beef.

This assertion is false in more ways than one. There cannot be 15,420 liters of water in a kilo of beef, because a kilo of beef weighs only one kilo. However, 15,420 liters of water generally weigh 15,420 kilograms at normal atmospheric pressure and without carbon dioxide.

Of course, that’s not what we meant. This is the story of many NGOs who use this absurd figure to create an atmosphere. I can’t tell if it’s conscious or out of stupidity. Maybe it’s both.

Indeed, what is not explained in the image of the BMEL, it is the fact that it is absolutely necessary to make the difference between green water, blue water and gray water. I have already explained this several times on this blog.

We should ask the BMEL to remove this graph and replace it with the figures for the water actually needed to produce each food. #Follow the science
