The E411 motorway was closed for part of the night near the Salzinnes rest area (province of Namur). The police carried out a series of checks there. An operation organized as part of the fight once morest house thefts, car and home jacking and drug trafficking, by checking the identities of drivers and checking cars. The location of this check was not chosen at random because it brings together several traffic routes.
“This brings together three main axes of Belgium. There is the traffic which comes from France, and which goes up and down towards Luxembourg. There is the traffic which comes from Antwerp, and which passes through Brussels to go straight down towards France. There is also traffic which comes from Maastricht and Liège, and which takes the Namur interchange to go back down to France”, explains Commissioner Lionel Lheureux, operational director of the federal highway police. “It’s a very busy route for foreign vehicles of all kinds. We are likely to encounter traffickers like go fasts or other traffic of all kinds.”
“We hope through these checks to be able to find loot, stolen vehicles and find the perpetrators,” added Isabella Caponi, first commissioner of the Namur section of the federal police.
The operation took place between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m. Around forty federal and local police officers were mobilized. The results will be communicated this Sunday. It is rare to block a highway for such checks.
