Bern, 13.01.2023 – Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis traveled to Washington, DC on 13 January 2023 and met his American counterpart Antony Blinken there. Cooperation within the UN Security Council and bilateral relations between the two countries were the focus of the meeting.
After taking part in the debate on the rule of law at the United Nations Security Council in New York on 12.01, the head of Swiss diplomacy continued his stay in the United States. In Washington, DC, he discussed with Antony Blinken, head of the American State Department, on the priority files for Switzerland at the Security Council. Particular emphasis was placed on improving the rule of law in relation to sanctions regimes. “I am confident that collaboration with the United States will enable faster progress on this key issue for Switzerland within the UN Security Council,” said Federal Councilor Ignazio Cassis.
Together, Federal Councilor Cassis and Antony Blinken also discussed the prosperous bilateral relations between the two countries. In accordance with its Americas 2022 – 2025 strategy, the Federal Council wants to intensify cooperation with the United States in terms of its foreign policy. Switzerland’s second trading partner following the European Union, the United States is a country of primary importance for our country. The exchange also focused on the areas of training, research and new technologies. The Swissnex sites in Boston, New York and San Francisco as well as several scientific and economic agreements, including the recent Memorandum of Understanding on quantum research, testify to the close scientific collaboration between the two countries.
