The Federal Council elections ended with a surprise: Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, from the Jura, was elected for the SP. Favorite Eva Herzog was just behind her. As expected, Albert Rösti made the election clear for the SVP.
The essentials in brief:
- For the successor to Ueli Maurer, the 55-year-old SVP National Councilor AAlbert Rösti won the election to the Federal Council in the first ballot.
- Surprisingly, the 58-year-old SP councilor follows Simonetta Sommaruga Elisabeth Baume-Schneider. The Jura native was appointed the new Federal Councilor by the Federal Assembly in the third ballot. For the first time since it was founded in 1979, Jura is now represented in the state government.
- Along with Alain Berset and Guy Parmelin, three French speakers will belong to the Federal Council. Ignazio Cassis joins them as the fourth representative of Latin Switzerland.
- On Thursday, the Federal Council, together with the newly elected members, will discuss the department distribution to discuss. A larger castling is not entirely improbable.
- Comment on the election: Elisabeth Baume-Schneider made it into the Federal Council with laughter and the power of black-nose sheep – but is that enough?
- Rösti on target: With him, a man becomes Federal Councilor who lives the concordance.
