The assistance mission of 18 NBC defense specialists from the Armed Forces to disinfect bird flu carcass transports in Biberbach, Amstetten district, which began on November 8, 2024, ended today. The soldiers of the NBC defense company Korneuburg prevented the bird disease from spreading from an affected company. To do this, they decontaminated 20 passenger cars, four telehandlers, 18 trailers and eight trucks with containers for the safe removal of dead animals in a total of 785 person-hours.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “Once again it shows how quickly and competently our soldiers – in this case experts from the NBC defense force – solve challenging operational tasks. Such operations demonstrate how important it is to prepare for complex threat scenarios. This happens with the necessary training together with modern equipment. We have already achieved a lot and will consistently continue on the path of retrofitting. I would like to express my great thanks and respect to all those who helped in this assistance operation, whose quick and competent commitment prevented the bird flu from spreading further. At the same time, I wish all farmers and everyone affected a lot of strength in these challenging times.”
Disinfection use
After the bird flu outbreak in Biberbach, thousands of animals died or had to be killed due to the disease. In order to prevent the spread of contamination, the soldiers of the NBC defense force from Korneuburg were deployed. They set up a lock in which they disinfected the wheel arches and underbody of the vehicles as well as the containers in which the dead animals were transported.
Experienced NBC defense force
The soldiers of the NBC defense force protect against NBC attacks – these are nuclear, biological and chemical threats. They also help with earthquakes, chemical accidents, epidemics or environmental pollution at home and abroad. They were recently deployed to treat drinking water in Klagenfurt and abroad, most recently in 2023 after an earthquake in Turkey.
The armed forces will help if requested
If a catastrophe is imminent, the soldiers in the barracks prepare and stand ready. They will be ready to help in no time.
At the request of the authorities, the Federal Army deploys for assistance and supports civilian emergency services. In the event of major accidents, several thousand armed forces helpers can simultaneously ensure support for the people in Austria.
