Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “We provide support where we are needed.”
Vienna (OTS) – As of today, Friday October 20, 2023, space and property protection in Vienna will be increased with soldiers from the Federal Army. The additional personnel will primarily be provided by the military police. The Federal Army supports the guarding of particularly vulnerable objects and Jewish institutions in order to ensure greater security together with the police. The operation is expected to last until the end of November.
Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner: “The Federal Army has been protecting many objects in Vienna for several years and supporting the police in doing so. Due to the current situation, the security of particularly vulnerable objects is being increased by additional soldiers. The presence of our soldiers not only ensures greater security and protection for our Jewish community, which is an indispensable part of Austria, but is also intended to increase the feeling of security among the population. Because terror and fear must have no place in our country.”
As part of the security police assistance mission, the soldiers fulfill the tasks of the executive branch and have the same powers. The objects of protection are selected by the police and assigned to the Vienna military command. The Vienna Military Command takes over military leadership. The strength of the security team varies and depends on the protection needs of a facility. As before, surveillance is carried out around the clock.
In 2016 and 2017, soldiers were already guarding objects worthy of protection in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior. In 2020, assistant soldiers began protecting property as part of the fight once morest the pandemic. The last security police assistance operation in which the military police were increasingly deployed was in 2020 and 2021 due to the terrorist attack on November 2, 2020 in Vienna.
