The daily allowance in the armed forces will be increased – from five to 6.50 euros. This means that more money will be available for seasonal and regional food in the future, the ministry announced in a press release on Wednesday. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) was pleased regarding the “added value” for employees, soldiers and militia members.

“In this way, we will continue to ensure that more regional and seasonal food ends up on the barracks tables in the future,” emphasized the Defense Minister. There are 90 catering facilities in the Federal Army across Austria. With the focus on regional food, measures are also being taken for the climate – “shorter transport routes protect the environment,” says Tanner.

In addition, the “Climate Plate” project has been ensuring more regionality, sustainability and quality since 2021. In 2022, around twenty percent of the total 2.4 million lunches were served as climate-friendly menus. Since 2023, the “Climate Plate” has been offered as a daily lunch menu.
