AFTER success with hundreds of millions of streams from various digital streaming platforms through the album Riuh (2022), Feby Putri continues her journey by releasing her latest album, Hitam Putih. The Black and White album was officially released on September 26. This album is not only a form of exploration of Feby’s latest music, but also an inscription of what she feels as a migrant with all its sweetness and bitterness.
“Actually, this second album is still about the journey of a nomad. A migrant who is old enough. Because in the album Riuh I talk about me being 18 years old, as a migrant, still confused, shocked. “Then now on the Black and White album, I’m mature enough to understand myself and how the world works,” said Feby in a press release received by Media Indonesia, Thursday (26/9).
Feby decided to move from Makassar to Jakarta to pursue a career in the music industry. As time went by, his dreams came true. However, there are big consequences that Feby has to swallow. Far from his family and not even by his mother’s side when she died. This incident made Feby dig deeper into her feelings. About loss, sorrow, distance, time, sincerity and everything that drains his heart. This process becomes a clear pattern in the Black and White album.
“In 2023, when I was going about my days in Depok as usual, I got a call that my mother was no longer there.”

“I can only blame myself, I regret leaving. So I couldn’t be there directly to see my mother. I heard the sad news in the afternoon, I had to buy a plane ticket which was closest at 10 pm. I felt at that time that time had passed for a long time. “On the way home to Makassar, I really just sat, silent, daydreaming,” said Feby.
Feby immortalized her grief over her mother’s passing through the song Daya Diri on this album. Feby also included a recording of her mother’s advice in the track Mother’s Voice. The recording shows the mother saying, “Listen when your parents tell you something, son. “It’s good if we still have our parents to advise us later, if our parents are no longer there.” This recording was taken from a video that Feby accidentally found on her laptop, after her mother died.
The track that is the focus of this album is Hopefully There’s Free Time, a song that was born from Feby’s experience of being underestimated when she started her career as a musician. Unexpectedly, those who took it for granted a few years later actually contacted to thank Feby for her musical work. The Black and White album closes with the track Newly Growing Feelings, about sincerity in living life after everything that has happened.

Feby chose the title Black and White as a parable of sorrow and sincerity, a light and dark journey through life that brings many lessons in knowing yourself.
“Black and White is because there are songs that I describe as ‘black’, there are songs that I describe as ‘white.’ If I interpret ‘black’ as the color of my sadness, my sadness about my life’s problems and sadness because of the sorrow that has occurred in 2023. So, you could say that the Black and White album is all about my life in 2023-2024. “If it’s ‘white’, I interpret it as the color of relief, freedom and sincerity,” said Feby.
Black and White involves quite a lot of producers from different musical backgrounds. They are Lafa Pratomo, Enrico Octaviano, Vega Antares, Iga Massardi, Adam Febrian, Eky Rizkani, and Eunice Tanzil. Feby did this as a form of musical exploration.
“In the second album I really want to explore my music, not in the same genre as the previous album. Maybe it’s too early to explore, but I actually want to enrich my music genre.”
Black and White consists of 11 tracks. The order of the songs on the album is arranged using the dramaturgy of Feby’s journey, so that when listened to sequentially they present a complete story. The tracks consist of The World, Hopefully There’s Free Time, Hands Saying Farewell, Impressions by the Head, False Smile, Duration, Mother’s Voice, Self-Power, Participation, Hand Strokes, and Newly Growing Feelings.
