1634: Thirty Years’ War: In Eger in Bohemia, Albrecht von Wallenstein, Duke of Friedland, is murdered by officers from his former army. Emperor Ferdinand II had previously deprived him of his supreme command because of high treason (unauthorized negotiations with Saxony and Sweden). At the head of the imperial troops were Field Marshal Prince Ottavio Piccolomini, Count Matthias Gallas and Count Johann Aldringen.
1954: The Syrian military dictator Adib Shishakli is overthrown by the army and goes into exile. President Hashim Bey Atassi, deposed in 1951, returns to office.
1964: Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali from 1965) becomes world boxing champion of all classes in Miami, Florida with a knockout victory in the 7th round over Sonny Liston.
1964: Chancellor Alfons Gorbach (ÖVP), who replaced Julius Raab in 1961, resigns. On April 2nd, ÖVP chairman Josef Klaus will also become head of government. SPÖ chairman Bruno Pittermann remains vice-chancellor.
1994: The trial against Emmerich Assmann begins at the Graz regional court. He is accused of having collected almost 20 million schillings for the disposal of 88,000 mines from Swiss army stocks without completing the order. On February 25, the industrialist was sentenced to three years in prison – one of which was unconditional.
1994: The fanatical Jewish settler Baruch Goldstein causes a bloodbath in Hebron. He shoots thirty Palestinians praying in the Haram al-Khalil mosque.
2004: The EU and the USA agree on the coexistence of their navigation satellite systems.
