Tibet Popularly known as ‘The Prince’ Yak (Tibetan shovel) It is a strong animal, but local people say that its species is now facing extinction.

The Tibetan ox can easily survive in sub-zero temperatures and these animals are bred in abundance in the highlands of the Karakoram and Himalayas.

Yak, which lives in the mountains for 10 months out of 12 months, also known as the king of the mountains, used to be found in abundance in Gilgit-Baltistan but now its breeding population is declining.

A good number of them are still found in the Karakoram and Himalayas.

In return for breeding, the yak owner is given a reasonable amount of money or native butter by the villagers.

The meat of Tibetan bull is salty and tasty with low fat content. People also use yak meat soup to relieve cold in colds.

Ghulam Nabi from Sadpara village in Gilgit-Baltistan keeps eight yaks in his house.

Ghulam Nabi started rearing two male and female yaks 10 years ago, now he has eight male and female yaks.

They also have two more yaks of the village which they take care of themselves.

Ghulam Nabi said that the price of a yak is currently between two and a half to three lakh rupees, while during Eid Qurban, its price goes up to more than four lakh.
