The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday that vaccine makers should update their Covid-19 booster shots to target the newer omicron subvariants gaining traction in the United States.
Dr. Peter Marks, head of the FDA’s vaccines division, said manufacturers should update their vaccines to target omicron BA.4 and BA.5 in addition to the original strain of the virus that first appeared in Wuhan, China in 2019.
The FDA’s independent expert panel voted overwhelmingly Tuesday to recommend a vaccine change following a day-long meeting in which they weighed the pros and cons of the vaccine update.
