Are stadium opponents fighting behind the scenes?

The new Zurich stadium has cleared a hurdle. But the start of construction is still a long way off – also because of a single person from Zurich.

Although the Chinese-led Hoppers and Canepa-Klub FCZ might hardly be further apart in terms of management structures, the two Zurich clubs are doing something together: at the new stadium.

The planned Credit Suisse Arena on the Hardturm site recently cleared a hurdle. Two voting rights appeals were dismissed at the Federal Court in Lausanne. “Finally these objections were rejected,” said FCZ boss Ancillo Canepa at the media event before the start of the season.

One of the plaintiffs was Peter-Wolfgang von Matt, he says: “I respect my defeat without any ifs or buts.” But von Matt also shares that “his safety concerns in risky games have not gone away”.

New objections are possible

That is why the freelance court interpreter is fighting the project. Von Matt considers the Letzigrund to be more suitable for GC and FCZ, which the two clubs see as completely contrary, of course, for marketing reasons alone.

But the start of construction is still a long way off. Residents can now object to the design plan and the building permit – but von Matt lives in a different part of the city. Will he now support third parties?

He tells Blick: “As the appellant, I have requested access to important documents that were previously secret or in fact inaccessible. (…) Of course, I pass these documents on to all interested third parties for their free disposal, in particular to any appeals officers, interest groups and media representatives.»

Canepa says frustrated: “Unfortunately, in Switzerland you can egomaniacally delay every step with objections.”
