Now he’s here: the Italian World Cup finalist is coming to FC St.Gallen on loan

Inter Milan lends right-back Mattia Zanotti to the eastern Swiss side for a year. Three weeks ago, the 20-year-old Italian was still in the final of the U20 World Cup. It remains his dream to one day establish himself at the renowned Milan club.

It has become a little stalemate regarding the possible arrival of Mattia Zanotti, a lively back and forth. With a presentation video uploaded by FC St.Gallen a few days ago, which shows the young footballer in a green and white dress. But the video quickly disappeared. There were probably still a few things to be clarified, maybe it was also regarding any clauses, contract details.

But now it’s fixed. Zanotti joins the Eastern Swiss on loan for this season and following five years in the youth academy of Inter Milan and one season with the first team, he is now trying to gain a foothold with the active players. Because the step in Serie A with all the trappings might be a bit big, he now wants to do it in the Super League at FC St.Gallen.

Contract with Inter until 2027

Needless to say, Zanotti still belongs to his owning club, for which he has so far made three appearances in the top division. Zanotti completed the entire past season with the pros, but was used more with the U19s. But not so long ago, Inter Milan prematurely extended the contract with the talent by two years until 2027. Which means: The Serie A club thinks big regarding the 1.77 meter tall right-back, who also plays on the left on the defensive can.

The youth international of Italy is 20 years old. Zanotti came on as a substitute in the U20 World Cup final lost to Uruguay on 11 June but was actually a regular for the Squadra Azzurra throughout the tournament. Zanotti himself says his strengths are power and speed, and his dream remains to be a part of the Inter Milan first team. Which would then probably almost automatically lead to squads for the senior national team. But there is still a long way to go until then.

Sports director Alain Sutter says: “Mattia indicated his great potential in a top Italian team. We are delighted that he is joining us and wants to take the next step in his young career with us.”

Am Open Air

A first acclimatization with Eastern Switzerland has already taken place: Like many other teammates, Zanotti is said to have sniffed the open air air and listened to a few concerts; there are indeed worse starts in a strange place.
