Super League
The FCL is not stopped by the dispute with Alpstaeg – Central Swiss club receives the license for the 2023/24 season
The missing signature of stadium majority owner Bernhard Alpstaeg was a big topic in Central Switzerland for a long time. But the quarrels with the major shareholder did not stop the Swiss Football League (SFL) from granting FC Luzern the license for the coming season on Monday.
All ten current Super League clubs will receive a license from the Swiss Football League (SFL) for the next 2023/24 season. Also FC Luzern, which has been in a relentless power struggle between the club management and shareholder Bernhard Alpstaeg since last autumn.
As the majority owner of the stadium, the 77-year-old Alpstaeg even threatened not to sign the license application for the use of the Swisspor Arena. At a later point in time, the extremely wealthy patron of the Swisspor company said that football might be played in the arena next season. The City of Lucerne, in the person of Mayor Beat Züsli, had put pressure on and pointed out the following agreement: “The City of Lucerne has an ongoing building lease agreement with Stadion Luzern AG. This has the sole purpose of ensuring that Stadion Luzern AG and the stadium ensure professional Super League operations for FC Luzern or any successor organization.”
License I entitles you to participate in the European Cup
It is also important for FC Luzern that it has received License I from the SFL. It is required for participation in the Uefa competitions and of course also entitles you to take part in the Super League. The Central Swiss are third with five rounds to go in the championship and can have legitimate hopes of taking part in a European competition next season.
FCL President Stefan Wolf comments on the club’s website:
“We note the decision of the license commission with satisfaction. Even if we expected it, it is a clear signal that FC Luzern is on a good and sustainable path.”
Bank guarantee from Bieri and the prospect of high income
For the financial obligations of the association in the millions, the financier, shareholder and vice-president Josef Bieri was able to meet the criteria of the SFL license commission with a bank guarantee. The FCL expects high transfer income this summer – among other things, the 20-year-old midfielder Ardon Jashari is to be sold for at least 6 million francs. As mentioned, the club should also participate in European business. In addition, the central Swiss benefit from higher viewer income in the current season.
