FC Lugano’s Europa League Crucial Playoff Against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise

The last Swiss side to start their European season on Thursday, Lugano have a chance to make the Europa League group stage. But they must beat the Belgians of Saint-Gilloise.

In Ticino, we were not so unhappy at the end of last season to have let slip 2nd place in the league in favor of Servette FC. Because the Luganese were thus already assured of being able to play in the group stage of a European competition. It is the first time since 2019 that they will play in the second tier of the European scene following 2017.

Reunion with Amoura

Mattia Croci-Torti’s team therefore wants to win its third participation in the Europa League. However, the obstacle is considerable in the play-off with the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. Last year, the Belgian club reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League, where Bayer Leverkusen stopped them.

Recently, the RUSG has had a boy in its ranks who knows the Luganese perfectly. Just a week ago, Mohamed Amoura left Ticino for southern Brussels for around four million euros. The 23-year-old Algerian, who scored 17 goals in 66 appearances in his two seasons at Lugano, would certainly have been a welcome alternative for Croci-Torti thanks to his speed. The coach will now have to find solutions to stop his former player.

If FC Lugano, who are due to play their home game at the Stade de Genève, were to fail on the next two Thursdays, their journey through European football would still continue in the group stage of the Conference League.
