At FC Bayern, the question of who is responsible for the crisis is getting louder. Sports director Hasan Salihamidzic focuses on the transfer balance.

Munich – According to his own statements, ex-coach Hansi Flick did not get along with him very well. Ex-assistant coach Hermann Gerland chatted in the “double pass” over Whisky-Cola that he didn’t get along with Hasan Salihamidzic. Gerland was an institution at Bayern Munich.

FC Bayern: criticism of Hasan Salihamidzic is said to be growing

And it should also be loud between Flick’s successor Julian Nagelsmann and “Brazzo”, as the sports director is called Bild have cracked. His post is said to have never been questioned. Also because Salihamidzic is said to be a favorite of Bayern patron Uli Hoeneß.

But: Do doubts regarding Salihamidzic’s work grow now in the crisis? That wrote on Monday (April 24) the always well-informed Kicker. A look at a banal statistic also shows a deep red transfer balance – measured by financial criteria.

Because: How from the “Bundesliga transfer balance sheet”. transfermarkt.de shows that Bayern’s transfer minus since 2017 under the responsibility of sports director Salihamidzic has totaled an estimated 238.65 million euros.

Hasan Salihamidzic: Responsible for transfers at FC Bayern

A look back: On July 31, 2017, the 46-year-old Bosnian was introduced as sports director. On July 1, 2020, the former Bundesliga professional was appointed sports director. Under his guidance, the club only achieved a transfer surplus of an estimated 70 million euros in the 2018/19 season. If he was praised for some transfers, there were also questionable decisions. In the summer of 2019, Salihamidzic reportedly invested 80 million euros in the transfer for Lucas Hernández, who came from Atlético Madrid.

Striking: At the time of his signing, a stubborn inner ligament injury had put the French world champion out of action – and had been since mid-February 2019. The 27-year-old defender was still presented to Bayern injured – he was only able to really get started weeks later. A knee bruise and a torn inner ligament in the ankle followed within a very short time until January 2020. Since signing up, he has been injured twelve times.

In addition to the torn inner ligament (missed 14 games), Hernández suffered a torn meniscus (off 63 days) and a torn muscle bundle (missed ten games). Since November 23, when he was injured at the World Cup in Qatar, Hernández has been out with a cruciate ligament tear. Since the summer of 2019, the defender has played just 74 out of a possible 131 Bundesliga games.

Nevertheless, Sky just reported on Monday (April 24) that his contract, which runs until the summer of 2024, is to be prematurely extended by three more years to 2027. Millions and millions for a player who is constantly injured? While Bayern, with current assets of 264.7 million euros (as of October 2022, according to their own statements), urgently need reserves for reinforcements?

Hasan Salihamidzic: Deep red transfer balance at Bayern Munich

The financially deep red transfer balance shows something else: Munich has apparently forgotten how to sell players profitably. Or at least offsetting huge transfer expenses through sales. The best examples were David Alaba (to Real Madrid), Niklas Süle (to Borussia Dortmund) and Corentin Tolisso (to Olympique Lyon), who left the club on a free transfer. Bayern had paid 41.5 million euros for Tolisso in the summer of 2017.

Internally there are now doubts as to whether the sports director is up to the FCB.

Jann-Fiete Arp, Alvaro Odriozola, Michael Cuisance, Philippe Coutinho, Tanguy Nianzou and Bouna Sarr were examples of outright transfer flops. Of course, the fact that not every transfer is successful is part of the business. The fact that Bayern have seven full-backs and not a single world-class centre-forward causes plenty of discussion. Also that the supposed king transfer Sadio Mané fell far short of his expectations – and instead caused negative headlines off the pitch.

The kicker now wrote that Salihamidzic was the leading force “following his quarrel with coach Hansi Flick” to install Nagelsmann as the new coach “with a five-year contract” in 2021. In addition, “all the difficulties between Nagelsmann and the professionals only arose under his weak leadership”. The result: Five games before the end of the season, BVB is the leader of the table, not Bayern.

Hasan Salihamidzic: Does FC Bayern’s sports director have to worry?

Internally, there are therefore doubts as to “whether the sports board is up to the FCB; Or rather, there are increasing opinions that the German record champions are a size too big for him,” he analyzed Kicker following the disastrous 1: 3 (1: 0) of Bayern in Mainz. Does Salihamidzic even have to worry regarding his job? These are turbulent days on Säbener Strasse in Munich. (pm)
