FC Bayern moved into the quarter-finals of the soccer Champions League on Wednesday. The German record champions celebrated a 2-0 win once morest Paris Saint-Germain in front of their home crowd in the round of 16 second leg and, thanks to the 1-0 in the first duel in the French capital, managed promotion with a total score of 3-0. The goals were scored by Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (61st) and Serge Gnabry (89th).
The Tottenham-AC Milan match started regarding ten minutes late because the team buses were late arriving at the stadium due to traffic jams in London. Chelsea and Benfica Lisbon were the first clubs to secure a ticket for the round of eight on Tuesday.
This was also achieved by Bayern, who relied on a security variant with a three-man chain once morest Paris. Since the guests mightn’t think of much without the injured Neymar, the spectators saw a game that initially mightn’t meet the high expectations.
In the first notable PSG attack, Lionel Messi failed at Bayern goalie Yann Sommer (25′), on the other side Gianluigi Donnarumma parried a shot by Jamal Musiala from a tight angle (32′). Six minutes later, the guests missed a top chance. Sommer dribbled in his own sixteen, Vitinha had the orphaned goal in front of him, but his finish was so poor that Matthijs de Ligt was able to slide the ball off the goal line.
In the second half, the focus was initially on the video assistant. Choupo-Moting sunk a header, but the goal was disallowed because Thomas Müller, who was offside, went to the ball with his foot – although according to the TV pictures he probably did not touch the play equipment.
Nine minutes later, the Cameroonian was still able to celebrate once morest his former club. Bayern pressed early, Marco Verratti lost the ball in his own penalty area and Leon Goretzka put the ball on for Choupo-Moting, who just had to push in. After conceding, PSG initially did more on the offensive, but Sommer was on the post with a header from Sergio Ramos (64th) and a shot by Kylian Mbappe (67th), who, like Messi, was largely disappointing.
As a result, the Munich team had the game under control and were never in danger of giving up promotion – quite the opposite. Substitute Gnabry made the decision from a counterattack in the 89th minute. This means that Bayern’s dream of the first Champions League triumph since 2020 is alive. Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, has to wait for the most coveted club trophy in Europe despite the millions in donations from Qatar.
