FC Bayern: coaching decision made | Nachrichten.at

After initial rumors, there is now official confirmation: the coaching decision has been made at FC Bayern Munich. The record champions will part ways with Thomas Tuchel, but the collaboration will only end at the end of the season. Tuchel’s contract would run until the end of June 2025.

The media reports talk regarding intensive discussions between the coach and the club management. It was only in March of last year that the 50-year-old took over the German record champions as the successor to Julian Nagelsmann. He led Munich to their eleventh championship title in a row on the last matchday. This season, however, FC Bayern is threatened with its first titleless season since 2011/12.

In the DFB Cup, the Munich team was eliminated by third division team 1. FC Saarbrücken. In the round of 16 of the Champions League, FC Bayern must make up for a 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio Rome in order to reach the quarter-finals on March 5th. In the fight for the championship, Bayer Leverkusen is already eight points ahead of Munich.

Enough time for successors

With the decision to end the season with Tuchel, those responsible at FC Bayern have enough time to present a suitable successor in the coaching position. On the other hand, Tuchel’s now announced expiry date is also a handicap. In “politics,” the Bayern coach would be a “lame duck” with a significant loss of authority. The same thing probably applies to sports.

In FC Bayern’s official statement, CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen stated: “In an open, good conversation, we came to the decision to mutually end our collaboration in the summer. Our goal is to carry out a sporting realignment with a new coach for the 2024/25 season. Until then, every individual in the club is expressly challenged to achieve the maximum possible in the Champions League and the Bundesliga. I also explicitly hold the team responsible. Especially in the Champions League, we are convinced that following the 0-1 defeat in the first leg at Lazio Rome, we will move into the quarter-finals in the second leg in our fully occupied Allianz Arena with our fans behind us.” Coach Tuchel’s official comment in the category “No-Na “: “We have agreed that we will end our collaboration following this season. Until then, I and my coaching team will of course continue to do everything we can to ensure maximum success.”
