FC Barcelona Under Threat: Potential Exclusion From European Cups Over Financial Fair Play Violations

2023-12-22 22:50:05

According to the German newspaper Die Welt, FC Barcelona is under threat of exclusion from next season’s European Cups for violating financial fair play rules. UEFA, very worried about the financial situation of the Catalan club, would have doubts concerning the financial report recently presented by the Barcelona leaders.

Barça without a European Cup next season? The specter arises again this Friday evening, through an article in the German newspaper The world. According to the German daily’s investigation, FC Barcelona is not within UEFA’s guidelines regarding financial fair play, which the European body evaluates over three-year cycles.

Last September, the Catalan club and its president Joan Laporta announced, during a press conference presenting the financial results, a net profit of 304 million euros. A sum which, on paper, removed the threat of an infringement and therefore of sanctions going as far as eviction from the Champions League.

Except that UEFA, for its calculation of financial fair play, takes into account income solely linked to football and not to the overall activity of the club (Barça being an omnisport club with therefore very varied branches). Income from future TV rights or marketing is not taken into account either. Added to this is the article published in October by the Cadena Copein which the media specifies that the Catalan club would actually have a negative balance sheet of -34 million euros after payment of taxes and arrears.

Barça accounts? “A disaster”, according to UEFA

According to Die Welt, at UEFA, Barça’s accounts are considered “a disaster”, a consequence of the debt of more than a billion euros that the club has been carrying since the change of governance. The management of Joan Laporta, who recovered the slate, had to activate several levers to bring in money urgently, by reducing the payroll or by selling certain assets (the club’s TV for example) in the now famous “palanca”.

UEFA is reportedly considering a “two to three year” suspension of Barça in the European Cup, given the seriousness of the financial situation of a club which is also completely renovating its stadium this season (reason for the relocation of the matches at Montjuic). The news caused a stir in the Spanish media this Friday evening.

Barça strongly supported the Super League project – relaunched on Thursday following the announcement of the opinion of the European Court of Justice – with the hope of very large revenues which would partially or completely erase its debt.
